Review; What's Left of Me (The Hybrid Chronicles #1) by Kat Zhang

Eva and Addie started out the same way as everyone else—two souls woven together in one body, taking turns controlling their movements as they learned how to walk, how to sing, how to dance. But as they grew, so did the worried whispers. Why aren’t they settling? Why isn’t one of them fading? The doctors ran tests, the neighbors shied away, and their parents begged for more time. Finally Addie was pronounced healthy and Eva was declared gone. Except, she wasn’t . . .

For the past three years, Eva has clung to the remnants of her life. Only Addie knows she’s still there, trapped inside their body. Then one day, they discover there may be a way for Eva to move again. The risks are unimaginable-hybrids are considered a threat to society, so if they are caught, Addie and Eva will be locked away with the others. And yet . . . for a chance to smile, to twirl, to speak, Eva will do anything

My Thoughts

This was like nothing I have ever read before and I loved it, within the first few pages I already had pages full of notes. The idea of two souls woven together was intriguing, I couldn't help but wonder after the regressive soul faded did people mourn like they would a child? would the sibling miss there presence? I had to keep reading to find out more.

I was fascinated by the whole story. Addie is the dominant soul and Eva should have faded, but she hasn't  There parents fear that they will be hybrids, and hybrids are illegal in this world. After years of doctors and hospital appointments Addie is finally declared "settled" meaning everyone thinks Eva as faded and Addie doesn't tell them any different, they live in secret like this Addie pretending she is the only soul in her body and trying to not get noticed, until a new friend finds out there secret and tells them that Eva could move again, and speak again. Addie is reluctant but Eva is eager to try.

although Addie is the dominant soul in many ways Eva seems the strongest perhaps its the years of observing life instead of been fully able to enjoy it but she as an inner strength that both Eva and Addie will need.

I loved Ryan/Devon especially Ryan. Ryan seemed more of sociable of the two and therefore more likeable.

What I thought was great about this book is that there were a few occasions other than with Addie and Eva when they were two souls in one body, I never got confused with who was who even when the souls switched. I could even tell souls apart before the been told in the story. to me that showed great writing by the author.

I loved this book from the beginning but it was halfway through when things really kick off
and Addie and Eva's relationship is put to the test on more than one occasion even to the point where they refuse to talk to each other .
they are going to have to relay on each other in the days to come to get out of the terrible situation they have found themselves  but its not only themselves. together with there new friends they need to work towards escaping those that will do anything to rid the world of hybrids.

I cant wait to read more in the next instalment.

Review; The Birth of Vengeance by Paul Andrew Ross

Jonathan Harper's hands are soaked in blood and darkness is destroying his soul, but he still has a choice, Human or Vampire? Day or Night? Vengeance or Forgiveness?

Tragedy strikes when rescuing his best friend from a bullying gang. He is hounded out of town and starts a new life in London where he falls in love with Scarlett, but he is targeted by new bullies and mugged and betrayed.

However, Jonathan's life is transformed by Thorn, a beautiful imprisoned vampire, who reveals his Dad's secret research. A formula offering the temporary powers of a vampire for the night. He steals the formula and sets out on a path of revenge, but quickly discovers a life of vampire is far from simple. His murderous dark tendencies horrify him and doubt creeps in.

Thorn, his mentor and lover, drags him deeper into the vampire darkness. However, Scarlett and the Vampire Hunters that chase him could be his way back to the light and normality.

The path of consequences becomes represented in the two women he loves, Scarlett or Thorn? Human or Vampire?

About

This dark urban fantasy series embarks on an action packed adventure, as Jonathan must face the consequences of his decisions. Is Thorn his dark heroine or his eventual death? A vampire horror story into dark choices.

“The Birth of Vengeance (Vampire Formula #1)” is the first novel in a series of new vampire books.

My thoughts
The Birth of Vengeance was a fresh take on vampire, something few authors are capable of doing.

Jonathan wants nothing more to escape his past and put it behind him when he and his father move from Leeds (I actually squealed that part of this book was set in Yorkshire  he hopes it will be start of a new life. things begin well when he meets Scarlett. he is instantly drawn to her but believes she is far out of his league he is surprised when she seems to want to hang out with him and more so that she could be interested him. things really couldn't be going better until he runs into a new set of bullies.

Jonathan first meets Thorn at his father facility, he had know idea that he had a vampire caged and even less idea that he as a serum that will temporarily give the user vampire powers.

Jonathan embarks on a journey of revenge. Revenge against the bullies in his present and the ones back in leeds. But Jonathan struggles with his decision and he is torn between day Jonathan who wants to go back to his old life and Scarlett and night Jonathan who wants to stay with Thorn and carry on his revenge. both believe there way is the correct way. but which will win.

I enjoyed the new take of the vampire story, I liked how Jonathan was able to get pay back for all the times he had been bullied and the revelations at the end was shocking

The Blurb
Have you ever wondered what could be hiding in the shadows?

Well, for eighteen-year-old Zahara Faraday, she doesn’t have to wonder. You see she comes from a lineage of Light Witches, those who have chosen to help protect and serve between the supernatural world and the human world. The only problem is Zahara, like her father Solomon, is as human as a human being can be whereas her mother, Mia, and her Aunt Catalina, were born as Light Witches. As a family they hunt down rogue supernaturals—creatures who harm humans or who have committed an act against their kingdom.

Zahara’s hunting skills are usually kept dormant since her parents would prefer she live life as a normal human girl without knowledge of the supernatural world. She plans on doing just that—except when she finds a couple being attacked by fairies, she has no choice but to step in. Before she can return to pretending to be blissfully ignorant, Zahara encounters a problem she isn’t the least equip to handle: Bryan Hamilton, the good looking new co-worker she has to help train. In a heartbeat, her best friend, Becca King, has set her up on a double date with herself and her new crush, Rekesh Saint-Louis, who happens to be the most powerful leader of the biggest Imago Coven in South Florida –supernatural creatures with the ability to control water . . . and suck out human souls.

Zahara has no time to focus on how she’s going to explain her double date with her best friend and the enemy they have a tentative truce with to her parents because soon one of the members of Mia and Catalina’s coven is found murdered with a strange tattoo of a snake with wings carved into his arm.

Zahara is then thrown into a whirlwind battle with an angel determined to have revenge against God, an Imago coven she doesn’t think they should trust, and slew of dream-eating fairies and powerful Nephilims, hybrid children of angels and humans, more than happy to rip her to shreds.

Normal just got a deadlier definition.

Next is Bitch Hollywood, different to the other covers I have chosen so far but I just love this cover
The Blurb

But Hollywood is a huge shock, moving from his down to earth comfortable life in London to the cut-throat world of Tinseltown.

Fillip faces a choice, to make his dream a reality should he become one of them; devious, manipulative, corrupt? Or will he choose happiness and return to the love of his life he left back home in London?

Bitch Hollywood is a jaw dropping, gut-busting comedy about the trials of life and love in the city where dreams are supposed to come true

the cover for Always and Forever I think is quite poewrful and beautifully sad especially having read the book
The Blurb
Mia's first reaction is outright disbelief. Obviously, a mistake has been made. Sixteen-year-old girls don't die. But, when the diagnosis is confirmed, she dives headlong into anger. If she has to die, why should it be of cancer? In fact, anything would be preferable to cancer. Better for her to say when, where, and especially how.

Determined to meet death on her own terms, Mia devises scheme after scheme to get the job done. A “fall” down the basement stairs, driving her car off a bridge, and even a dance with a train all end in her survival.

And through it all, Mia keeps her family and friends at arms' length with her destructive and hurtful behavior. With each failed suicide attempt and burned relationship, she slowly realizes that it’s not the dying that she’s afraid of, but the life she’ll be leaving behind. Now, that life is in a shambles. As time begins to slip through her fingers and death is upon her, Mia fights to rebuild the bridges she has destroyed, but can she do it before the clock runs out?

Author Interview; Jade Kerrion

Jade Kerrion is the Author of the award winning Double Helix series and as being kind enough to stop by and answer some questions.

How did you come up with the Double Helix series?

My undergraduate major from the Johns Hopkins University was in Biology and Philosophy, and I thought it was finally time to make some money off my college degree! On a more serious note, I wanted to write a novel that challenges our definitions of perfection and of humanity (without once mentioning the word “vampire.”) Science has been making one breakthrough after another in the area of genetic engineering, and the future depicted in Perfection Unleashed is more likely than most of us would believe.

Your love of science is evident in your books but well explained to novices like me, how easy/hard was it to write in terms that people without your knowledge would understand?

It’s like packing for camping. Pack everything you think you need, and then eliminate half of the things from the list. Likewise, for the scientific explanations, I wrote as much as much as I thought was necessary, and then deleted half of it.

How do you juggle your writing life with your family life?

With a fair amount of difficulty. I’m fortunate to have a very understanding and supportive husband. None of what I’ve done could have happened without his partnership.

If you could invite one author dead or alive to dinner who would it be?

I would love to talk to Neil Gaiman. His Sandman series is fantastic. I love the way he weaves reality and mythology from a variety of sources into a seamless whole. It’s flawlessly put together. At first, you see only the threads, many of which do not seem to make sense, but at the end, it always comes together in a breathtaking tapestry of stunning complexity.

What is your favorite writing ritual? Is there a Favorite place beverage/snack/music that gets you writing?

I don’t really think I have a writing ritual. I’m fairly well-trained to write at any place and any time. That said, I love writing to the soundtrack from Final Fantasy: Advent Children. The music is triumphant and heroic—the celebration of the unlikely hero who finds a way to forgive himself and in so doing, saves himself and the world. I think it captures the essence of Danyael Sabre (the protagonist of the Double Helix series) Also, I think the chorus of the song Beautiful World, from Westlife, exemplifies Danyael’s courage and compassion:
I never thought that I was that strong to carry on, carry on tonight
Forgiveness in your eyes, with nothing to hide
All I know is you've shown me it's a beautiful world, it's a beautiful world

What is the last book you loved reading?

I really enjoyed Linell Jeppsen’s most recent novel, Onio. It’s a beautifully written fantasy about a Sasquatch and a young woman who cannot hear. I highly recommend it.

Have you got a favorite character from the Double Helix series that you loved to write?

Zara’s always fun to write, but I think my favorite is Danyael Sabre. Danyael has many facets. On the one hand, he is a doctor who works insane hours for little pay at a charity clinic in Brooklyn, New York. On the other hand, he is an alpha empath. He controls emotions and channels pain. Physical and emotional pain fuels his deadly mutant powers; with a touch, he can heal or kill. Craving privacy and solitude, he shields both his mind and emotions, but we catch tantalizing glimpses of his courage and compassion.

Even among the alpha mutants who redefine the boundaries of power in a world transformed by the Genetic Revolution, Danyael is rare and coveted by many who desire to control him and his power. His hard-won normal life is upended when Zara Itani, a mercenary whose abrasive attitude exceeds even her beauty, frees Galahad, the lab-created perfect human being from his laboratory prison. Danyael learns that his genetic code was used as Galahad’s physical template; that kind of news is enough to wreck even the best day…

What's next? More Double Helix?

Yes! More Double Helix. When the Silence Ends, a YA novel featuring Dee and Dum (with significant guest appearances from Danyael and Zara) will be released shortly. Earth-Sim, an occasionally whimsical and frequently irreverent novel about Earth’s history as seen through the eyes of the two students and android assigned to manage it, will be coming out in 2013, and I’m currently working on a new novel tentatively titled City of Eternal Night. Once that’s done, I’ll turn my attention back to the main Double Helix series and start working on the fourth novel in the series.

What  advice would you give to wannabe writers?

keep writing, and be committed to excellence. Whether you choose traditional or self publishing, writing requires dedication to the art, a dedication to always getting better.
There is much to learn from other authors, from writing manual' seminars, from critique groups, from editors... the list goes on.

Finish this sentence. When I am not writing I am...

…thinking about writing. It’s terrible, I know. I think I’m well past the stage of needing inspiration; writing is more of a compulsion now. In general, I have a compulsive personality; people like me should never get exposed to alcohol, cigarettes, or recreational drugs—we’re easy prey. Years ago, computer gaming and writing used to go hand-in-hand for me. My characters from my computer games inspired my writing. Since then, however, my characters have taken on a life of their own and thus, I have been freed to happily obsess about them without needing the occasional computer gaming boost to sustain them.

Thank you Jade for stopping by :)

Go Inside Lucifer (Sons of Old Trilogy, #1)
Coming January 31, 2013!

“Care to dance?” Bryan asked, already leading Zahara to the dance floor.
She pulled him back and shook her head. “I’m the worst dancer! My feet, hips, and body don’t know how to coordinate well together, so I wind up looking like an ostrich trying to bust a move.”
Bryan laughed and pulled her onto the dance floor. “Whether you look like an ostrich or a ballerina dancer, you’re still the best lookin’ one here.”
He spun her around and placed his hands on her hips, attempting slowly to move her in the same rhythm as his own. At first Zahara’s body moved stiffly, even under Bryan’s warm and smooth hands, which were sending shivers creeping up her spine and around her midsection; she couldn’t stop looking around the club. Stuck in between a group of scantily clad teenage girls who kept dropping to their knees and bouncing back up, a giggling mass of hysteria, and a Spanish couple pressed so tightly together their dancing came off as borderline sex, Zahara felt like an alien. Even the hyena-sounding girls–who Zahara was pretty sure, were all buzzed and quickly heading to being drunk—moved with more skill than she possessed.
But Bryan pressed her closer against him and placed her arms to circle his neck from behind. He moved a little faster and Zahara fell into step, laying her head against his shoulder and closing her eyes to drown out the crowd. She focused on the hard muscles of Bryan’s chest, his heated breath against her hair, and his fingers gripping her waist. She absently wondered if it was wrong that an angel was dancing inside of a club full of youth, and if this was as weird and exhilarating for him as it was for her. Bryan spun her around to face him and kissed her. He wasn’t as gentle as he usually was, digging his hand into her hair and nibbling on her bottom lip. Zahara whimpered and moved her fingers underneath his shirt, digging her fingers into his back.
Bryan pulled back and laid his forehead against Zahara’s, his breath ragged and intense enough to set her on fire. “You’re making this difficult.”
“Making what difficult?” Zahara huffed.
“Leaving you.” Bryan closed his eyes and kissed her again.

You caught me, I was definitely dreaming of you. If I remember correctly, you were frolicking on a beach, wearing a pretty skimpy red bikini and some kind of flower in your hair. Gotta say that was the best dream I’ve ever had.” ~Bryan

Review; Broken Aro (The Broken Ones #1) by Jen Wylie

Open your eyes to darkness. What do you see? Does the darkness frighten you? Now imagine the darkness being the cargo hold of a slave ship. Your city has fallen. Your family is most likely dead. You don't know anyone around you, and some of them aren't even human. Giving up would be so easy to do, but not for Arowyn Mason. Not after being raised in a military family with seven brothers. Every great story should begin with a plan. Aro’s was to escape and to survive.
Escape comes, but at a price. As they reach the shore, Aro and the other survivors learn that freedom doesn’t mean safety. The slavers want their property back and will do anything to get it. The party uses every ounce of their brute strength, a hearty helping of cunning, and even ancient magics to keep themselves alive. Sickness, danger, and even love surprise them at every turn. Dealing with danger becomes their way of life, but none of them ever considered that nothing can be quite as dangerous as a prophecy. Running turns into another race altogether as her world falls to pieces again and again

My thoughts
Aro Is a fifteen year old girl who actually reads like a fifteen year old girl which doesn't always happen in YA books. she is eager to grow up and resents been called a child but yet many of her actions are childlike and her innocence and naivety  add to this.

When taken from her brothers who are most likely dead she refuses to give in and makes unlikely friends with a prince, a Fey and some soldiers . her brothers have taught her to fight and to be strong and so she does just that and manages to escape from the slavers who captured her along with her new friends, bur the journey is only just beginning.

Kei and prince are the most protective of Aro although the two dislike each other the reasons are unclear to begin with, one thing is sure though the Prince as many secrets and he will tell no-one his really name.

the book moved along at a good pace stalling occasionally when the group where resting but overall I never felt like it was slow

The prophecy that is mentioned really had my intrigued especially as bits of it started to fall into place and more was revealed. I am anxious to know more about how the prophecy will finally be fulfilled.

I really enjoyed reading this story although YA Fantasy which I love it was also an adventure, something new for me. this is a unique series and one I cant wait to read more of.

Oh and lets not forget the dragon Damon I would love to read more about him, he was definitely a very interesting character.
